Since 2006, the regional government of Jaén has been carrying a yearly contest to select their best EVOOs. The oils that win the contest receive the “Jaén Selección” label, which is a big honor, as well as a whole year of promotional activities. The promotion of these oils includes being showcased in national and international fairs and events, like FITUR and Expoliva, amongst others.
These oils are also the key ingredient in the dishes that compete for the “Jaén, paraíso interior” international price for cooking with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
This year, the judges have had to taste 34 different olive oils, produced in cooperatives as well as in private mills. The 7 selected oils include 6 produced with the picual olive variety and 1 with the royal variety. The “Jaén Selección 2013” winning oils are the following: “Castillo de Canena Royal Temprano”, “Picualia”, “Cortijo La Torre Premium”, “Dominus Cosecha Temprana” and also like in previous years “Melgarejo Gourmet”, “Oro de Cánava” and “Oro Bailén Reserva Familiar”.
The 7 winning oils could be tasted by the attendees to the International Tourism Fair 2013 (FITUR) that took place recently in Madrid. In Jaén’s stand, people were able to enjoy the liquid gold.
